Candis Mosely Pettway
Candis Mosely Pettway (1924 - 1997) and her husband Tank had 16 children. For a time, they also took care of their niece, Loretta Pettway, who also followed in the family quilting tradition. After most of her children left home, Candis went to work preparing lunches at the elementary school near her home.
In her late fifties Candis began working full time, quilting with her Aunt Allie Pettway, Lucy Mingo and her Cousin, Lola Pettway. The group assembled for over 20 years working together under an old Sweetgum tree in her yard. They worked together almost every afternoon until the end of her life in 1997.
Candis’ work was included in the 2006 traveling museum exhibition, Gee’s Bend, The Architecture of the Quilt, originating at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Additional museum venues for this exhibition include the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Orlando Museum of Art, The Walters Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, the Speed Art Museum, Denver Art Museum, Milwaukee Art Museum and the Philadelphia Art Museum.
