Sharon Williams was born in Gee’s Bend, in 1959 and started making quilts in the family tradition of her mother, Rosie Lee Pettway and her Grandmother, Willie Seltzer. Sharon started making quilts at the age of 12 or 13, she went to school with Mary Virginia Pettway, Loretta Pettway Bennett and Emma Mooney Pettway, all first class Quilters of their generation.
Sharon and daughter Jemica, work together on all their projects. Jemica Williams was born in Gee’s Bend, in 1983 and began working intently on quilts with her Mother in 2019 and has developed an increasing passion for the work, well rooted in the four generations of tradition established by her Great-grandmother.
Sharon began making quilts originally for members of her family, and as she progressed in her style, she continued gaining local notoriety for her use of color and unique patterns that she put together in her quilts.
Sharon and Jemica prefer to work in the style they call, “My Way”, a freestyle design that relies on the intuitive flow of creativity,
“I do what I do without worrying about a pattern to follow. I start with something going in a direction and then I wind up with something else. Something new, I work with it until I like what I see and then that takes me into the final direction. I love to do this work. My mind stops turning, and I don't worry about anything while I work. I just stay focused on putting pieces together to create the patterns with the colors that bring it all together.”
